Within each node, you can apply additional filters to narrow the scope.

If you are attempting to build a storyline of what steps occurred prior to the error, create a new Custom View with the interface below. 

Another option to view the logs is using the Web interface provided in SharePoint Central Administration, allowing you to access the logs anywhere across the World Wide Web!
