How to Post Images and Video to a Discussion Board in SharePoint 2013, Part 1

One of the great things about SharePoint is the ability to customize our exchanges with others. This includes the ability to add images and videos to our SharePoint Discussion Boards. For SharePoint 2013, Microsoft has provided a number of options for inserting images and video, including inserting media directly from your computer, from a SharePoint Asset Library, and from a Web page. In this article, part one of a two-part series, we’ll walk through the different methods for adding images to a new discussion topic or replying on a SharePoint Discussion Board. Specifically, we’ll show you how to insert images from your local computer, a Web address, and a SharePoint picture library or asset library.

Insert Image from local computer to Discussion Board:

  • To insert an image into a new discussion topic, initiate a new discussion thread. In the Edit Item mode, select the Insert tab from the Ribbon. Select Picture and then From Computer from the drop-down list:
  • Click Save. You will now have a new discussion thread whose body consists of the image you selected:
  • To insert an image into a reply to a discussion, open up the discussion and navigate to the text box below it. In the Edit Item mode, select the Insert tab from the Ribbon. Select Picture and then From Computer from the drop-down list:
  • Click Reply to insert your image:
  • You will now have a reply to the discussion board’s message whose body consists of the image you selected:

Insert image from a Web address to Discussion Board:

  • To insert an image into a new discussion topic, initiate a new discussion thread. In the Edit Item mode, select the Insert tab from the Ribbon. Select Picture and then From Address from the drop-down list:
  • Input Web address for the image as well as Alternate text for the tooltip of the image:
  • Click OK. You will now have a new discussion thread whose body consists of the image you selected:
  • To insert an image into a reply to a discussion, open up the discussion and navigate to the text box below it. In the Edit Item mode, select the Insert tab from the Ribbon. Select Picture and then From Address from the drop-down list:
  • Click Reply to insert your image:

Insert image from a SharePoint picture library or asset library:

  • To insert an image into a new discussion topic, initiate a new discussion thread. In the Edit Item mode, select the Insert tab from the Ribbon. Select Picture and then From SharePoint from the drop-down list:
  • To insert an image into a reply to a discussion, open up the discussion and navigate to the text box below it. In the Edit Item mode, select the Insert tab from the Ribbon. Select Picture and then From SharePoint from the drop-down list:
  • Select the List where the image is stored from the menu tree on the left and then select the image file you wish to insert from the menu choices on the right. Click on the image to add the item to add your discussion thread:
