User’s Guide to Filters Collection for SharePoint 2013, Part 1: Bamboo Choice Filter Web Part

Fear not, SharePoint 2013 users, Bamboo's Filters Collection for 2013 is here, and it's the predictably, wonderfully obvious solution to all your SharePoint filtering problems. Filters Collection includes five of the most popular, immediately useful SharePoint filter types that are available on the market.  Filters Collection lets you customize Choice, Date, Text, and Current User filters, connect them to a Web Part, and have them up and running in no time. Best of all, the Collection also includes Bamboo's List Filter Web Part, which enables you to create complex, multi-column filters for List View Web Parts that are easy to make, and even easier to use.

In this first installment of a five-part series, we will introduce you to the Bamboo Choice Filter Web Part and some of its key functionalities.

To begin, navigate to the Edit Page menu and click on the Insert tab.  Choose Bamboo Solutions from Categories, and Bamboo Choice Filter Web Part from Parts:

Upon doing this, you'll notice that the Choice Filter Web Part is not functioning.  This is because it has not yet been connected to a list from which it can filter data.

To connect the Web Part to a list for filtering, follow these directions:

1. Click the Edit Web Part menu. A Connections menu will appear under it.

2. Click Connection > Send Filter Values To > List name (In this example, we'll be using the list "KCus"):

3. A dialog box will appear titled Choose Connection.  For Connection Type, choose the Get Filter Values From option, and click Configure:

4. Next, click on the Configure Connection tab in the dialog box.  From here, you will need to select your Consumer Field Name selections.  There are a number of Choice related data type options including: Dropdown, Checkbox, and Radio:

5. Click Finish:

Now, navigate to the Choice Filter Web Part. Make sure that you have selected Choice Type and input data similar to the column which you connected to in the list above. This is because you will be filtering data that belongs to them:

After you have connected to and configured the tool pane, the Choice Filter Web Part will display data to filter for the drop-down menu as pictured below:

As an example, if I select Reston and click Apply filter, the list will only display items which have data belonging to Reston in the Choice Dropdown column:

If you want to stop filtering, click the Clear Filter hyperlink button:

By default, the displayed list will contain all of the data without anything filtered out:

To disconnect the list, go to Connections > Send Filter Values To > List Name (i.e., KCus):

A Configure Connection dialog box will appear.  From it, click Remove Connection:

You will be given the option to confirm the removal of the connection.  Click OK:

The Choice Filter Web Part is now no longer connected.
