How to Manage Permissions for a List Item or Document in SharePoint 2013

There are a number of new features to lists and sites, as well as many changes to the user interface and locations in SharePoint 2013. In this article, we will focus on one of these changes, and walk through how to manage item level permissions for a list item or document in SharePoint 2013.

To manage the item level permissions, follow these steps:

  • Go to a Document list and create items on it. On each item, you will see a button next to the Name column. Click on the button and a popup menu will appear. The popup menu will also have a button. Click on the button to continue.

  • Choose the Shared With option on the menu list that appears:

Next, click the Advanced hyperlink button:

By default, all list items will inherit permissions from their parent. To remove this function, click the Stop Inheriting Permissions button in the Ribbon:

    • A message dialog box will appear. Click OK to continue:

    • Now, you can delete or grant permissions as well as Edit User Permissions as needed.
